S. Korea to diverge from other EMs on healthy economy: Hyun Oh-seok

South Korea’s Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Hyun Oh-seok said, “the nation should diverge from other emerging countries, in terms of a spillover from the so-called ‘Bernanky shock’ from possible tapering of the US quantitative easing, buoyed by sound financial health such as current account surplus and a low portion of short-term foreign debt.”

Mr Hyun noted that the government jointly held an emergency meeting with the relevant authorities yesterday to check market developments amid talk of a turnaround in the US monetary policy and discuss measures to tackle the issue.

However, he feared that following the remark by the US Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanky that the US would slow down quantitative easing within the year, the global financial markets were growing more volatile.

“Basically, the US would taper down quantitative easing on the condition that the US economy will revive, and thus the US economic recovery will be a boon to our economy,” he said, adding “however, massive capital fled from emerging countries including Korea due to possibility of shrinking global liquidity, fueling volatility of global financial markets.”
