South Korea’s corporate sentiment on economic conditions for the fourth quarter (Q4) went up 10 points quarter-on-quarter (qoq) to 106, according to the survey of the IBK Economic Research Institute on 3,070 small and mid-sized manufactures released Tuesday.

The nation’s Business Survey Index (BSI) for Q4 climbed on signs of economic recovery in advanced nations including the US and year-end seasonal effects.

By item, the figure for orders (106) and domestic sales (105) jumped 10 points qoq, each, reflecting higher expectations for upbeat economic outlook.

However, the BSI reading for profitability still hovered below the baseline of 100 and the ratio of manufactures, which plan to scale back facilities investment, also declined for two consecutive quarters, showing much time is needed before overall managerial condition gains momentum.

Weaker domestic sales, difficulties in collecting debts and fierce competition were cited as the biggest obstacle to management.

“Expectations for the Q4 economic activity are turning upbeat, but it remains to be seen whether their management conditions actually improve considering weaker profitability and sluggish investment,” noted the institute.
