South Korea¡¯s leading smartphone maker Samsung Electronics will be releasing a successor model to its Galaxy Note in October this year, which will come in a slightly larger 5.5 inch (in) display.

¡°Samsung will unveil the Galaxy Note 2 during the IFA 2012, a consumer electronics show held in Berlin, Germany in late-August,¡± said a source familiar with the matter Monday. ¡°The new model will definitely come with a 5.5 in. display, but it is unclear as to what other features will be included.¡±

Samsung Electronics has been sweeping the global smartphone market with its recent release Galaxy S III, the third series of its widely-popular Galaxy S line-up. The release of the Galaxy Note 2 is timed to compete head-on against Samsung¡¯s biggest rival Apple, as the US-based phonemaker plans to release its latest iPhone 5 (or the New iPhone) during September or October.

Though the Galaxy Note 2 will come in a bigger display, the actual size of the phone will be similar to the current Galaxy Note model, which is equipped with a 5.3 in. screen. The phone will use Jelly Bean, a 4.1 version operating system (OS) developed by Google.

The successor model will also come with a more powerful quad-core processor. Quad-core processors imply the device has four separate application processors (APs), which are central processing units (CPUs) used by mobile devices like smartphones and tablet PCs. A quad-core processor will greatly improve the processing speed, while also facilitating various multi-tasking functions.

¡°There are also talks of improving the camera resolution to 12.0 or 13.0 megapixels, up from current 8.0 megapixels, but this may be changed depending on other factors. It will not, however, showcase the unbreakable plane (UBP) display technology, a precursor to the flexible display. UBP will most likely be applied for the next product released after Galaxy Note 2,¡± said an official familiar with Samsung¡¯s product development.
