South Korea¡¯s major electronics company LG Electronics plans to launch a successor to its smartphone model Optimus G, Optimus G2 (provisional name) in as early as May next year.

LG Electronics recently discussed with its subsidiaries including LG Display and LG Innotek and decided to unveil Optimus G2, a smartphone that will be equipped with ultra high resolution or full high-definition (HD) display, six months earlier than the previously scheduled launch time in the second half (H2) next year, said sources in the industry Monday.

The rescheduling is seen as an attempt to compete head-on with the Galaxy S4 (provisional name) which will be released by domestic rival company Samsung Electronics in H1 next year.

The smartphone that LG will unveil next year is expected to feature a screen of 440 pixels per inch (ppi). Its full HD screen is 1.5 times clearer than Retina display of Apple¡¯s iPhone, and five to six times clearer than a 40 inch, full HD TV. The crystal clear screen, which will be supplied by LG Display, will be around five inches. The Optimus G2¡¯s release date is likely to coincide with that of Samsung Electronics, who intends to equip its new smartphone with full HD, active-matrix organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED) display. The two models are expected to invite a fiercer competition between the two companies.

LG¡¯s new smartphone is set to be imbedded with Qualcomm¡¯s two gigahertz (GHz) quad-core chip for its application processor (AP), a key system for supporting running apps in a mobile operating system environment.

The Optimus G2 will feature Key Lime Pie, a successor Android version to Jelly Bean, as its mobile operating system.
