STX Shipbuilding Develops World¡¯s Largest 22,000 TEU Containership
STX Shipbuilding Co., Ltd announced on Wednesday that the company has succeeded in developing a 22,000 TEU containership -- the world¡¯s largest shipping capacity.

TEU is a unit of cargo capacity, and a 1 TEU ship can load one unit of 6 meter-container; therefore, the containership recently developed by STX can load 22,000 units of 6 meter-container.

According to STX Shipbuilding, the world¡¯s largest containership currently in service is a Danish ship of 13,500 TEU capacity and Germany had developed a 20,000 TEU containership last year.

STX Shipbuilding said that as the company has surpassed the level of 20,000 TEU which had been considered as the production limit both technologically and financially, the recently-developed ship has proved the superiority of domestic shipbuilding technology that currently dominates the global shipbuilding market.

The containership is 460m in length, 60m in width and 30m in height -- a colossal ship that has a gross deck area equivalent to four soccer fields combined.

STX official said, ¡°Along with the acquisition of the global cruise ship company Aker Yard and the development of the world¡¯s largest-scale containership will lay a foundation for us to become the world¡¯s leading shipbuilder.¡±
