U.S. Investments in Domestic Stocks Total $140 Billion
Amid increasing fluctuation in the domestic financial market as foreign investors sell out, the United States was found to have invested the second largest amount in Korean stocks and bonds among newly emerging countries.

According to the Korea Center for International Finance on Thursday, U.S. investments in Korean securities (stocks and bonds) were tallied at $140 billion as of the end of last year.

U.S. investments in Korea stood at $74 billion at the end-year of 2004, moving on a constant upward stride with $119 billion in 2005, $121 billion in 2006 and $140 billion in 2007. Considering that the total U.S. foreign securities ownership was worth $7.2 trillion as of the end of last year, investment in Korea weighs in around 1.94 percent.

By country, U.S. foreign securities investments were the most in the U.K. at $1.1 trillion, followed by Japan at $594 billion, Canada at $586 billion, Cayman Islands at $544 billion, France at $448 billion and Germany at $426 billion. The top 6 countries accounted for 52 percent of the total amount invested.

Korea¡¯s ranking fell from 11th place in 2006 to 13th at the end of last year. It placed first among emerging countries at the end of 2006, based on single countries, while slipping to second when including China and Hong Kong as one entity. However, Korea¡¯s position in the ranks declined last year as investment in Brazil increased.
